WHO WE ARE
Urgent Action Fund for Women's Human Rights (UAF) is a global women’s fund that exists to protect, strengthen and sustain women human rights defenders at critical moments in time. By intervening quickly when defenders are poised to make great gains or face serious threats to their lives and work, UAF provides an efficient and effective model of strategic philanthropy.
Designed and led by women activists, UAF’s core programs –Rapid Response Grantmaking and Research, Publications, Advocacy & Alliance Building – strengthen and inform one another. Read more about UAF’s programs.
Both UAF and our sister funds, Urgent Action Fund-Africa, and Urgent Action Fund-Latin America, focus our efforts in the toughest terrain: areas affected by armed conflict, escalating violence, political volatility and extreme repression. We are led by our international activist Board of Directors and supported by our local and international advisors.
Since our inception in 1997, UAF’s annual budget has grown from $100,000 to $1.5 million USD, while our Staff has increased by only six individuals. To learn more about how Urgent Action Fund started, please read our History.
